Ingredients
  

Chocolate Cake Layers

  • 1 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 and 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 and 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs room temperature
  • 1 cup buttermilk room temperature
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water or coffee

Frosting and Filling

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 2 and 1/2 cups powdered sugar sifted
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream or milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch cake pans.
  • In a large bowl, mix flour, cocoa, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla. Beat until smooth.
  • Slowly mix in hot water or coffee. Batter will be thin. Pour evenly into pans.
  • Bake 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely before frosting.
  • To make frosting, beat softened butter until creamy. Add powdered sugar, cocoa, vanilla, and cream. Beat until fluffy.
  • Assemble cake by layering with frosting between each layer and all over the cake. Decorate as desired and chill before serving.

Notes

Add raspberry preserves or hazelnut spread between layers for a gourmet twist.
