Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch cake pans.
In a large bowl, mix flour, cocoa, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla. Beat until smooth.
Slowly mix in hot water or coffee. Batter will be thin. Pour evenly into pans.
Bake 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely before frosting.
To make frosting, beat softened butter until creamy. Add powdered sugar, cocoa, vanilla, and cream. Beat until fluffy.
Assemble cake by layering with frosting between each layer and all over the cake. Decorate as desired and chill before serving.
Notes
Add raspberry preserves or hazelnut spread between layers for a gourmet twist.
